Gabe Javier works for the University of Michigan's Spectrum Center, which serves the needs of the school's LGBTQ and allied students. An Ann Arbor resident, Javier and his team are working on several upcoming events, as well as addressing the everyday issues of LGBT life on campus.
1 How does working at U of M impact your ability to participate in activism?
My operate is activism! Even though it might seem that I would be constricted as to the messages I am able to send and what I am "allowed" to say, the essence of the work that we at the Spectrum Center accomplish is about helping students navigate a complex world full of labels and misperceptions. We oppose and support students, pushing them toward finding their most genuine selves. Even in today's earth, this is a radical idea!
2 What are some of the problems LGBT students enter to the Spectrum Center about?
What is great about the Spectrum Center is the roomy range of work that we get to do. Being the oldest center in the nation, we might readily say, "We've seen it all," but we know that we haven't

Gabe Evans Silent As Colorado GOP Calls for Burning of Pride Flags
Using their “harshest anti-gay rhetoric in recent years,” the Colorado Republican Party kicked off Movement Month by espousing homophobic, harmful rhetoric that called for the burning of all Pride flags…and Gabe Evans has refused to denounce the hate speech coming from within his own ranks.
Chairman Dave Williams, who wrote the send , said “he is remaking the state party in the image of Donald Trump.”
Just this week, Donald Trump endorsed extremist Gabe Evans for Colorado’s 8th District, rewarding Evans for standing by him as he was convicted of 34 felonies.
Evans would rather fall in line with his party bosses than do the right thing for Coloradans.
DCCC Spokesperson Mallory Payne:
“The Colorado GOP’s homophobic comments are repulsive and perilous, and Gabe Evans’ refusal to renounce them is disqualifying in itself. Evans’ silence proves he cares more about party politics than defending the rights and freedoms of Coloradans.”

This week, Gaby covers the ways LGBTQ Pride has become corporate and about money and marketing more so than about the original riot at its core. LGBTQ historian Dr. Eric Cervini joins the podcast to discuss how the gay community became good for business, the conflicts between queer liberation and queer acceptance, and how history must participate a part in any group, company or organization's Pride outreach. Then, Gaby and the co-hosts of the Dyking Out podcast comedians Carolyn Bergier & Melody Kamali chat about the weirdest Pride collaborations, why parents are obsessed with getting their kids fast fashion rainbow merch, and the doublethink that goes into working with companies to promote queer products or put on gay events.
