Every year the Spartacus Gay Travel Index creates a ranked list of the world’s most LGBT-friendly countries. Produced by the Berlin-based Spartacus International Gay Manual — which specializes in gay maps of international destinations, sauna and hotel guides, Pride calendars and more — it ranks nearly nations based on various criteria.

Thanks to legal improvements for trans- and intersex persons as adequately as anti-hate crime initiatives, Portugal for the first second managed to vault from 27th place to the superior of the SPARTACUS Gay Travel Index, and now shares the 1st place with Sweden and Canada.

The SPARTACUS Male lover Travel Index is updated annually to inform travelers about the situation of lesbian, gay, bisexual person, and transgender (LGBT) people in countries and regions.

The updated Spartacus Gay Explore Index, provides an overview of the situation for lesbian, male lover, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual, and queer individuals (LGBTQIA+) in a total of countries and regions. 

While Malta, Canada, Portugal and Spain have retained their top positions from , Iceland has now also reached the top ranking. 

While countries like Greece, Thailand, and Curaçao have significantly improved their rankings, the United States and the Republic of Georgia hold fallen behind.

In , Canada, Malta, Spain, Portugal, and, for the first time, Iceland clue the ranking. Close behind are Germany and New Zealand, sharing sixth place, followed by Australia, Norway, Uruguay and Switzerland, which all rank eighth.

Malta, Canada, New Zealand, Spain and Portugal are the most gay friendly countries for LGBTQIA+ travellers to venture to this year. Belgium stagnates and due to the advancing countries, it is now 21st on the list.

In addition to Malta, which already took first place in , Canada, New Zealand, Spain and Portugal contain now also moved to the top. 

In a separate ranking of the United States of America, the state of New York maintains first place.
