Perhaps the most difficult test for any gay male is to facehis hold Gay Shadow, that disowned region of the brain populated by themost shameful and horrifying aspects of the self. Banished by the egoto fester in the unconscious, the rejected Shadowside continues toexert tremendous influence in us queer men, inspiring covertpsychological agendas and self-destructive behaviors. This age-oldrepression--universal in all humankind--has been horribly intensifiedby two millennia of Christianity. Along with its ruthlessdemonization of homosexuality, Christian culture has relentlesslyshamed the darker aspects of the human psyche, in effect destroyingthe ability of anyone within its grasp to achieve psychologicalwholeness. Many leaders in the so-called New Age spiritualitymovement have taken this schism one step further by trying to makethe Shadow vanish completely, dangerously encouraging us to imagineourselves as all light and cherish. But now, through our archetypalaffinity for psychology--as successfully as many other capacities--gay menhave a unique opportunity to descend into the Mark Thompson's Gay Body: A Journey Through Shadow to Self is a remarkable personal account of what it means to possess, or live in, a gay body in the world today. But this book is not about body building, AIDS, or even simple physical health. In Gay Body Thompson takes one of the most profound questions of Western philosophy--how accomplish we unite our corporeality with our emotional and spiritual selves--and meditates on it from a uniquely gay male perspective. Using gay liberation philosophy, Jungian psychology, radical fairy consideration, and his own experiences with drugs, S&M, and transgressive sexuality, Thompson has created a work that mixes autobiography with theory in an attempt to discover how gay men can find their fullest potential, their truest selves. Having already chronicled gay male spirituality, history, and mythopoeia (in e.g., Gay Soul, LJ 12/94), Thompson now explores the gay male psyche. He seamlessly weaves an unsparingly candid autobiographical narrative with broader observations, drawing on elements of Jungian stereotypes, gay history Theterm"Stockholm syndrome" was coined after a hostage situation during a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden, in The victims started to protect for and bond with the robbers, even going as far as fighting off the police. Stockholm syndrome is described as a subconscious survival strategy, and sometimes as an emotional tie to one's captor. A fantastic example of this would be someone in an abusive partnership. I still remember the first time I realized how awful the situation had become. I was at his (let's phone him The Marine, seeing as that's how I now relate to to him anyway) going-away party and got extremely drunk because I couldn't deal with the fact that he was going away to fight in a war for seven months! I was intoxicated to the show where I couldn't even trek. Before that moment, I had never drunk that way, and it wasn't until the next day, when I had to deal with the aftermath, that everything became all too evident. At the party I was on the kitchen floor, begging him not to leave. Enough said, right? I was clearly over-invested in this guy! I literally couldn't deal with it! I Review
