The Canary Islands are a fantastic destination for gay travelers, especially once the bustling summer tourism season slows down in mainland Europe. Maspalomas is recognizable for being a completely gay resort town in Gran Canaria, the largest of the Canary Islands. Full of outgoing, friendly guys, you&#;re pretty much guaranteed a wonderful time.

What&#;s so extraordinary about the Canary Islands? Well, other than breathtaking landscapes (check out the Maspalomas Dunes), summer never really ends here in the Canaries. Spain&#;s southernmost territory, they&#;re just off Africa&#;s Western Sahara coast! With so much affectionate weather to spare, Maspalomas actually hosts two gay self-acceptance festivals every year.

Before summer even begins, Maspalomas hosts their first movement of the year, typically in May. As November rolls around, travelers ditch the cold weather up north for sunny dance parties at Maspalomas Winter Pride. I had an absolute blast dancing at the enormous Yumbo Centre. I made dozens of international friends through the week, many of whom I&#;ve planned more travel with!

On attending it, I was shocked and a little disappointed when I couldn’t find a free lesbian at Oban’s Pride event. Straight participation is great but where were all the lesbians? I’d always worked in LGBTQIA media and events and naively assumed that I’d find some small groups for LGBTQIA women around Oban, but I didn’t.

Oban has always been a well-liked tourist destination, with many guest houses selling out months ahead or tripling their prices as tourists flock from all over the world to enjoy our world-class scenery and boat trips to the islands in the summer months. Many queer women I knew would say they’d love to visit but the reality was that most gender non-conforming women went to places love Brighton or London when looking for a gay friendly holiday, so I decided to carry some queer women to Oban & Oban Lesbian+ Weekend wa
