LGBT

LGBT or GLBT is an abbreviation for lesbian, gay, multi-attracted and transgender. Queer is used to describe persons, specifically men, who are romantically or sexually attracted to persons of the alike sex. Lesbian is a preferred legal title for women who are romantically or sexually attracted to women. Bi-sexual refers to persons who are romantically or sexually attracted to persons of any sex or gender identity. Sometimes pansexual is used interchangeably with pansexual. Transgender is an umbrella designation for those whose gender identity or expression is distinct from their sex assigned at birth. Being transgender does not require one to undergo surgeries or make changes in physical appearance.

LGBT has been seen as a positive symbol of inclusion. To enhance such inclusion and create a sense of acceptance for a greater community, more and more people are now using the term LGBTQ, with Q standing for queer or questioning. Once used as a disparaging phrase against LGBT people, queer now refers to people who are not exclusively heterosexual. This word can be used by anyone within the LGBTQ commun

The terms and definitions below are always evolving, switching and often mean distinct things to different people. They are provided below as a starting indicate for discussion and sympathetic. This Glossary has been collectively built and created by the staff members of the LGBTQIA Resource Center since the premature s.

These are not universal definitions. This glossary is provided to help donate others a more thorough but not entirely comprehensive understanding of the significance of these terms. You may even consider asking someone what they represent when they use a term, especially when they use it to depict their identity. Ultimately it is most important that each individual define themselves for themselves and therefore also define a word for themselves.

This glossary contains terms, such as ableism and disability, that may not be considered directly related to identities of sexuality or gender. T

Sexual Orientation: a person’s emotional, physical, and/or sexual attraction and often the expression of that attraction. Sexual orientation is not necessarily the same as sexual habit.

Sexual identity: The way a person views and identifies their sexual orientation.

Gender identity: A person’s sense of being masculine, feminine, in-between or androgynous. It is important to recognize that this is independent from a person’s biological sex.

Gender individuality vs. sexual orientation: Gender persona is distinct from sexual orientation. Gender identity, the sense that one is a boy or a girl, is usually manifested by the age of 3 or 4 years. Sexual orientation, the sense of which gender one is emotionally, physically and/or sexually attracted to, does not manifest itself until much later in life, usually after puberty and often not until occupied adulthood.

Gender expression: The way in which an individual externally represents their gender identity and presents it to the nature.

Ally | A person who is not LGBTQ but shows support for LGBTQ people and promotes equality in a variety of ways.

Androgynous | Identifying and/or presenting as neither distinguishably masculine nor feminine.

Androsexual | A person who is emotionally, romantically or sexually attracted to masculinity or people with masculine traits regardless of  their own, or the other person's gender identity.

Asexual | The lack of a sexual attraction or desire for other people.

Bisexual | A person emotionally, romantically or sexually attracted to more than one sex, gender or gender identity though not necessarily simultaneously, in the same way or to the same degree.

Cisgender | A term used to detail a person whose gender identity aligns with those typically associated with the sex assigned to them at birth.

Gay | A person who is emotionally, romantically or sexually attracted to members of the matching gender.
